I felt so touched by what son had said to me because he is matured, sincere and understanding at the age of seven. The articles “14 years of trying, 3 miscarriages – and finally a baby” in The Sunday Times yesterday reminded me that I am so fortunate to have the children. I could better understand those who tried hard to have a baby because I have seen so many couples every weekend at the Infertility Clinic getting treatment. Every baby is a gift from haven.
Another topic, “Let’s Talk about Miscarriage gave a very good insight on pregnancy risks of Older Women seeking IVF treatment”. Currently, there are limits on IVF procedures in Singapore; 40 years old women does not received IVF subsidy, women who are above 45 years old cannot undergo IVF and those above 40 years old can undergo just 5 ART (Assisted Reproductive Treatment) cycles. These limits will be lifted next year. But the risks and difficulties do not go away or reduced. To maximise the chances of IVF treatment, drugs are prescribed for the women so that more eggs will be flushed out. The better quality eggs are picked to use and/or store. This means that the quantity and quality of eggs are lesser and/or poorer after each harvesting. The women will also get weaker after each treatment.
It is important to have elaborate medical assessments, social counselling and compulsory one-week break of cooling period before signing up the ART. But the women cannot turn back the clock. It would be of greater help if the women understand all these when they are at schools and/or at the point of getting married. This will help to prepare the women for a better family planning.
